Abia Governor Urges Media Practitioners to Prioritize Truth Over Fake News

In a powerful appeal to media professionals, Abia State Governor Alex Otti urged journalists to prioritize truth and accuracy in their reporting, avoiding the spread of fake news and fear-mongering. Speaking at the 2025 Media Vision Africa training in Umuahia, Otti emphasized the importance of inspiring confidence through responsible storytelling.

Represented by Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu, the Governor encouraged media practitioners to focus on reports that promote confidence and stability, rather than those that stoke fear and uncertainty. He pledged his administration’s continued partnership with the media in developing Abia State and Nigeria, while cautioning against the use of propaganda and distortion of facts.

Otti stressed the need for balanced reporting, suggesting that media practitioners should present both the challenges and successes of Abia State side by side. “In today’s Abia, where security and economic recovery are top priorities, we need narratives that inspire confidence, not fear,” he said. He also urged media professionals to remain faithful to their role as image makers, rather than merchants of fake news.

The President of Vision Africa, Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, echoed Otti’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of preparing young Nigerian media practitioners for future leadership responsibilities. He encouraged them to become job creators and shape a new culture of inspiration, rather than relying on political or government appointments for survival.

The training, which aimed to equip young media professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary for future leadership roles, highlighted the critical role that media plays in shaping public perception and influencing societal change. As Nigeria and Abia State strive to address pressing issues such as security and economic recovery, the need for responsible and accurate reporting has become increasingly important. By promoting truth, balance, and confidence-inspiring narratives, media practitioners can contribute to a more informed and empowered public, ultimately driving positive change and development in the region.
