Nigerian Governors Back President Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

In a significant show of support, the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have endorsed the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu, describing them as a key driver of inclusive development. The governors, who gathered for a two-day strategic meeting in Benin, reaffirmed their commitment to the president’s bold reforms, which aim to reposition Nigeria for long-term prosperity.

According to Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, the group has carefully assessed the country’s socio-economic and political situation and is backing President Tinubu’s efforts to revitalise the economy. “We believe that these reforms will accelerate inclusive development and create a more prosperous future for all Nigerians,” Uzodimma said.

The forum welcomed the defection of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom to the APC, seeing it as a reflection of the growing national consensus on the transformative policies of the Tinubu administration. The governors also commended the president for recent macroeconomic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and debt rationalisation, which they believe are essential steps towards long-term national revival.

In addition to their economic focus, the governors discussed security issues, praising the efforts of the Armed Forces and the police in curbing criminality across the country. However, they called for greater investment in surveillance technology and improved welfare for frontline personnel, while supporting ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots intelligence and community policing.

The governors also underscored the need to empower local governments as engines of service delivery and democratic inclusion, believing in a bottom-up transformation that starts from the wards and local government areas and moves to the national level. They observed a minute of silence in honour of the late elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, of Kano State, who passed away during the meeting.

The APC governors urged Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to rally behind the Tinubu-led government, saying that together, they can build a more secure, united, and prosperous nation. Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo noted that the group’s presence in the state was a testament to the party’s growing national appeal, adding that under President Tinubu, Nigeria is not just reforming policies, but also restoring confidence.
