In a bid to curb environmental pollution and protect public health, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has taken a significant step by sealing two properties in the Ikoyi area of Lagos. The properties, which were found to be obstructing the office’s operations and unlawfully discharging raw sewage into public drainage systems, have been shut down to prevent further environmental degradation.
According to Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, one of the affected properties, located at No. 2 Kebbi Street, Osborne Foreshore Estate, Ikoyi, Eti-Osa, was intentionally releasing untreated wastewater into public drains. This act not only constitutes a public nuisance but also contributes to environmental pollution and poses a direct threat to human lives. Wahab emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This act constitutes a public nuisance, contributes to environmental pollution, and poses a direct threat to human lives.”
Another property, located at the Mambilla Estate Gate within the same estate, was sealed for preventing agency officials from accessing the premises despite receiving multiple inspection notices. This action is in violation of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017, which underscores the importance of adhering to environmental regulations.
The commissioner’s warning to residents of Lagos is clear: environmental infractions will not be tolerated. He urged residents to adopt proper wastewater disposal and sanitation practices, stressing that any conduct that results in environmental degradation or poses a danger to public health will attract strict penalties, including possible prosecution. Wahab’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the environment and public health, and the consequences of failing to do so.
The sealing of these properties marks a significant step forward in the Lagos State government’s efforts to address environmental pollution and protect public health. As the city continues to grow and develop, it is essential that residents and property owners prioritize proper waste management and sanitation practices to prevent environmental degradation and ensure a healthy and sustainable living environment. With strict penalties in place for environmental infractions, residents are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and work towards a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
