Namibia Makes History with African Continental Free Trade Agreement Launch

In a groundbreaking move, Namibia has officially launched its participation in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), marking a significant milestone in the country’s economic journey. The first consignment departed from the Port of Walvis Bay, signaling Namibia’s active engagement in Africa’s continental free trade area. According to Hon. Amb. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Minister of International Relations and Trade, "The African Continental Free Trade Area is more than an agreement; it is a bold step towards Africa’s economic unity, offering Namibia and the continent a chance to unlock untapped markets and shared prosperity." The minister emphasized that AfCFTA is not limited to goods, but also encompasses services, including financial and professional sectors, opening new avenues for Namibian businesses and professionals across Africa.

The launch of AfCFTA presents a plethora of benefits, including expanded market access to over 1.3 billion consumers and a combined GDP of approximately US$3 trillion. This will enable Namibian businesses to diversify their markets and products, increase production, and strengthen the country’s industrial base. The agreement also prioritizes job creation, youth and women empowerment, and national resilience, reducing dependence on traditional markets and external shocks.

The Namibian government has pledged to support businesses of all sizes, providing necessary policy reforms, manufacturing incentives, and special economic zones to drive trade, innovation, and job creation. This launch is the culmination of years of dedication, including Namibia’s early ratification of AfCFTA and the gazetting of its tariff offer in December 2024.
