Nigeria Boosts Healthcare with N65 Billion Injection
In a significant move to strengthen its healthcare system, the Nigerian Federal Government has allocated over N65 billion to the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) for 2025. This substantial investment is set to support the continued implementation of the BHCPF, a crucial step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage in the country.
The allocation was made following the 11th Expanded Ministerial Oversight Committee (MOC) meeting, chaired by Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare. The committee approved N32.88 billion from the first-quarter 2025 release to cover BHCPF implementation for the first and second quarters of the year. This amount will be split evenly, with N16.44 billion allocated per quarter, in line with the 2020 BHCPF Guidelines.
The MOC also approved an additional N32.88 billion for third-quarter implementation, with disbursement expected by the end of August. This timely and efficient disbursement mechanism is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s primary healthcare system, bringing the country closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage. According to Professor Pate, the updated guidelines aim to enhance implementation coordination and accountability across all levels, ensuring that the BHCPF is implemented effectively.
The committee also formally approved the revised BHCPF Guidelines 2.0, which will be disseminated before the end of the third quarter. Furthermore, the MOC confirmed the phased rollout of the Mini District Health Information System (Mini-DHIS) starting in July 2025. This system will play a vital role in enhancing healthcare data management and decision-making at the district level.
This significant investment in Nigeria’s healthcare system demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of its citizens. With this allocation, the country is taking a major step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage, a goal that is critical to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to quality healthcare services. As the implementation of the BHCPF continues, it is expected that the country will see significant improvements in its healthcare system, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for its people.
