House of Representatives Calls for Increased Military Presence in Yobe State to Combat ISWAP Terrorism

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has issued a urgent call to the Federal Government to increase military presence and intensify operations in Yobe State. This move comes in response to a motion raised by Hon. Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim, highlighting the growing threat of ISWAP terrorism in the region.

The motion, which was noted by Yobe State Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications, Yusuf Ali, brought to light the devastating attack on Ngurbuwa village that occurred on April 18, 2025. This attack resulted in the loss of two soldiers and several vigilante members, and also led to the displacement of numerous residents. Furthermore, a critical bridge linking the area to other parts of the state was destroyed, exacerbating the crisis.

Hon. Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim, who represents Damaturu, Gujba, Gulani, and Tarmuwa Federal Constituency, also cited another attack that took place on May 3, 2025, in Buni Yadi. What’s particularly concerning is that this attack happened just hours after a regional security summit had convened in the area, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

In response to the motion, the House has urged the Ministry of Defence, security agencies, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the North East Development Commission (NEDC), and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to take immediate action. The focus is on boosting security in the affected areas and providing humanitarian support to the communities impacted by these attacks. The call for increased military presence and intensified operations aims to address the escalating threat of ISWAP terrorism and bring relief to the people of Yobe State.
