In a bold move to tackle crime, the Imo State Government has demolished a notorious building in Owerri, the state capital, that was allegedly used as a hideout by criminals. The demolition, supervised by Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, is part of the government’s efforts to rid the state of crime and ensure the safety of its citizens.
According to Nwaneri, the operation is a testament to Governor Hope Uzodinma’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on crime. The building, located in the Ama Hausa axis, had been under surveillance for some time after it was identified as a den for hardened criminals involved in trafficking hard drugs and illegal arms, as well as other violent crimes. These activities, Nwaneri noted, posed a significant threat to the peace and security of residents in the area.
The demolition was carried out with the assistance of security agencies, following a tip-off from a concerned citizen. Nwaneri emphasized that the government’s message is clear: Imo State will not be a safe haven for criminals. “We are going after every syndicate, every drug peddler, and every gun runner. No one is above the law, and no criminal enterprise will be tolerated,” he declared.
During the operation, several suspects were apprehended and handed over to security agencies for interrogation and prosecution. The Hausa community in the area has welcomed the government’s action, describing it as a positive development that will help cleanse their community of bad elements that tarnish their image and threaten peaceful coexistence. They have reaffirmed their support for genuine efforts to rid the state of crime, regardless of who is involved.
Nwaneri has urged landlords, market unions, and community leaders to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities within their domains. He warned that anyone found aiding or harboring criminals will be treated as an accomplice and dealt with accordingly. With this renewed effort, the state is on a path to safety and progress, and under the current administration, criminals have no place to hide. The demolition of the criminal hideout is a significant step towards achieving this goal, and it demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating a safe and secure environment for all citizens.
