North-Central APC Forum Demands National Chairman Position, Rejects Religious Considerations
In a bold statement, the North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has asserted that the region’s current hold on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) position will not hinder its bid to produce the next National Chairman of the party. This declaration comes in response to suggestions that the North-Central should relinquish the SGF position if it hopes to secure the National Chairman role.
The Forum, led by Chairman Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, emphasized the region’s significant contributions to the APC, citing the 1,760,993 votes (41.3%) it secured for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. The North-Central has the highest number of APC governors, with the party controlling five of the six states in the region. The Forum argues that returning the National Chairman position to the North-Central is not a favor, but a well-deserved recognition of the region’s strength and acceptance of the party.
The Forum also cautioned against using religion as a consideration in selecting the next National Chairman, stating that the North-Central is a secular region that will not be divided by self-serving individuals. Instead, the Forum urges President Tinubu to prioritize track records in making appointments, endorsing Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura for the National Chairman position due to his proven loyalty, commitment, and experience as a governor and senator.
Al-Makura’s impressive resume includes serving as a two-term governor, former Senator, and chairman of various party committees. His loyalty to the APC and President Tinubu is unquestionable, and the Forum believes he is the ideal candidate to lead the party forward. The North-Central APC Forum’s stance is clear: the region will not be swayed by suggestions that it must choose between the SGF and National Chairman positions, and it will continue to push for a leader who embodies the party’s values and principles.
As the APC navigates its leadership transition, the North-Central Forum’s demands serve as a reminder of the region’s significant influence within the party. With its strong track record and commitment to secular values, the North-Central is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the APC’s future. Will President Tinubu heed the Forum’s call and prioritize track records in his appointment decisions? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the North-Central APC Forum will continue to advocate for a leadership that truly represents the region’s interests and values.
