Breaking: Reddit Introduces Age Verification in the UK Amid New Online Safety Law
In a significant move to comply with the UK’s newly introduced Online Safety Act, Reddit has announced that it will begin verifying the ages of its users in the UK. This decision comes as the UK government strengthens its regulations to prevent children from accessing age-inappropriate content online. Starting July 14, Reddit users in the UK will need to verify their age before accessing certain mature content on the platform.
The UK Online Safety Act, passed in 2023, requires all platforms hosting restricted content to establish an age verification system by July 24. To comply with this law, Reddit has partnered with Persona, a third-party age verification provider. Users in the UK who wish to access restricted content will need to upload either a selfie or their government ID, which Persona will use to verify that they are over 18.
Reddit’s chief legal officer, Ben Lee, emphasized that the system is designed solely to verify users’ ages and does not collect or store identity information. “Reddit will not have access to the uploaded photo, and Reddit will only store your verification status along with the birthdate you provided,” Lee stated. This move is part of a broader effort to ensure that online platforms prioritize the safety and well-being of their users, particularly children.
However, the introduction of age verification laws has sparked concerns about digital privacy. Experts argue that such laws are ineffective, unenforceable, and pose significant privacy risks. Reddit itself seems to be pushing back against these laws, with Lee hinting at alternative approaches that don’t require platforms to ask for identification.

Australia, for example, is set to introduce age checks for people using search engines while logged in to Google or Microsoft accounts.
