Liverpool have initiated discussions with Newcastle United over a potential move for star striker Alexander Isak, though no formal bid has been lodged yet. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Merseyside club has expressed readiness to offer up to £120 million—a figure that would surpass the Premier League’s current transfer record by £4 million, eclipsing the sum paid for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer.

Newcastle remain intent on retaining the Swedish international, who has three years remaining on his contract. The Magpies are simultaneously exploring a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike, a forward also monitored by Liverpool, as they seek attacking reinforcements. Isak’s impact since arriving for £60 million in 2022 has been significant, netting 62 times in 109 appearances, including a career-best 27-goal campaign last season.

Liverpool’s pursuit of attacking options comes amid broader squad adjustments following the passing of forward Diogo Jota. The club had also been linked to Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta this week, signaling a proactive approach to bolster their frontline.

The interest in Isak has precedent. Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler publicly advocated for his signing during a talkSPORT appearance in early 2024, emphasizing the need for transformative talent regardless of Mohamed Salah’s future. “Even if Mo stays, they should be adding players who elevate the team,” Fowler stated, drawing parallels to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United sides. He highlighted the scarcity of top-tier strikers globally, predicting Newcastle would push to extend Isak’s contract amid external interest.

Salah, who recently renewed his Liverpool deal, contributed 29 league goals last term, supported by Luis Díaz (13) and Cody Gakpo (10). While Newcastle aim to resist offers, the potential £120 million windfall could aid their financial sustainability efforts. With both clubs navigating competitive and strategic pressures, negotiations are poised to test resolve in a market where elite attacking talent commands premium valuations.
