Tinubu Holds Special FEC Meeting to Honor Late Buhari

Tinubu approves expanded special FEC meeting to honour Buhari — Daily Nigerian

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has authorized an expanded session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC)—the nation’s highest executive decision-making body—to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday. The special session will convene on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, following a series of religious observances and attended by top government officials, judicial leaders, and members of Buhari’s family.

According to a Wednesday statement from Malam Rabiu Ibrahim, media aide to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the FEC meeting will begin at 5 p.m. local time. Its timing aligns with broader commemorative events, including a Third Day Prayer ceremony at Buhari’s residence in Daura, Katsina State, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The VP is set to head a federal delegation to the northern town, underscoring the government’s efforts to pay respects to the former leader, who governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023.

The expanded council session will include legislative leaders from both chambers of the National Assembly, judiciary representatives, and family members, reflecting a cross-section of Nigeria’s governance structure. Additional events marking Buhari’s passing will span days, with a special Islamic prayer session at Abuja’s National Mosque on Friday, July 18, and an interdenominational Christian service on Sunday, July 20. These interfaith observances highlight the nation’s religious diversity and Buhari’s role as a unifying figure during his tenure.

Buhari’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes, emphasizing his military background, anti-corruption campaigns, and efforts to stabilize Nigeria’s economy. The coordinated events signal a period of national mourning, with the federal government emphasizing unity and continuity. The Third Day Prayer, a traditional Islamic rite, and subsequent services underscore cultural and religious customs integral to Nigerian society.

The late leader’s legacy remains a focal point in local and international discourse, given his influence on regional security, infrastructure development, and diplomatic relations. As preparations unfold, the government has urged citizens to observe moments of reflection, with flags flown at half-mast in official buildings. The ceremonies aim to balance solemn remembrance with a recognition of Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape over decades of public service.
