A Nigerian governor’s warning to opposition politician Peter Obi over travel to Edo State has sparked allegations of an assassination threat and calls for international sanctions, escalating political tensions ahead of the country’s next general elections.
The youth wing of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, condemned Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent directive barring Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, from entering the state without approval. In a Friday statement, the governor warned that Obi would “take whatever he sees” if he defied the ban, prompting widespread backlash.
Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, labeled the remarks an “assassination threat” in a Saturday statement. “It is unbecoming of a sitting governor and former parliamentarian to publicly issue such reckless remarks against a citizen,” he said, accusing Okpebholo of violating democratic norms. The group urged Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to intervene, asserting that silence from federal authorities risks normalizing political intimidation.
The dispute reflects deepening divisions in Nigeria’s political landscape, with Nnabuike linking Okpebholo’s comments to an earlier incident involving Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, who also faced criticism for restricting Obi’s activities. Both governors belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while Obi’s Labour Party emerged as a significant opposition force in the 2023 elections.
The youth council called on Nigerian security agencies, including the police and Department of State Services (DSS), to guarantee Obi’s safety and reassure citizens of their right to free movement. Escalating their demands, the group urged the U.S., U.K., and allied nations to impose visa bans on Okpebholo, framing the move as a deterrent against inflammatory rhetoric ahead of the 2027 polls.
“This is not just about Peter Obi—it’s a threat to the Igbo community and Nigeria’s democracy,” Nnabuike stated, questioning why Obi, a former Anambra State governor, remains a frequent target of political hostilities. The statement emphasized concerns over shrinking civic freedoms and the weaponization of state power against dissent.
As of publication, neither the Edo State government nor the presidency had publicly addressed the allegations. Observers note the controversy highlights Nigeria’s fragile ethnic and political fault lines, testing institutions tasked with safeguarding democratic principles amid heightened electoral competition.
