The family of the late Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has extended heartfelt gratitude to citizens, world leaders, and political figures for their solidarity following his passing. In a statement issued by Mamman Daura, the family’s senior representative, and shared by spokesperson Garba Shehu, the Buhari family acknowledged the overwhelming support that helped them navigate their loss.
President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Remi Tinubu were singled out for their gestures of comfort, including the declaration of a public holiday and the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Buhari’s honor. Vice President Kashim Shettima also received praise for his presence in the United Kingdom and Daura during mourning observances, alongside ministers and state officials. “These acts have given us the strength to face this irreparable loss with courage,” Daura said.
Global leaders, including Britain’s King Charles III, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, were recognized for their personal condolences. Representatives from the African Union and ECOWAS also conveyed sympathies, underscoring Buhari’s international influence.
Domestically, Daura highlighted the solidarity of former vice presidents, legislative leaders, and state governors, including Atiku Abubakar, Yemi Osinbajo, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Traditional rulers such as the Sultan of Sokoto and the Emir of Kano were commended for their roles in commemorating Buhari’s legacy. Prominent business figures, including Aliko Dangote and Abdul Samad Rabi’u, further demonstrated cross-sector support through visits to Daura.
The family’s message emphasized gratitude for nationwide gestures, from citizen-led prayers to diplomatic tributes by foreign missions. “All of Nigeria came together to honor him,” Daura noted, adding that the collective empathy had been a source of solace. Closing with a prayer for divine blessings on supporters, the statement reinforced the enduring unity that marked Buhari’s final rites.
