Datti Baba-Ahmed Open to Stepping Aside in 2027, Urges Obi to Stick with Labour

2027: I'm ready for Peter Obi to contest without me - Datti Baba-Ahmed

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice-presidential candidate for Nigeria’s Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has signaled his willingness to step aside as Peter Obi’s running mate in the 2027 presidential race, should the party choose a different strategy. Speaking during an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time program on Tuesday, the politician emphasized his continued loyalty to the LP while dismissing speculation about a potential shift to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Baba-Ahmed’s remarks followed questions about his political future and rumors of coalition-building efforts among opposition parties ahead of the next election cycle. “My own thinking is that you should convince me why I should go to ADC,” he said, referencing the smaller party’s limited visibility during the 2023 polls. “Where was ADC in 2023 when Labour Party secured 10 million votes? I’m yet to be convinced to leave LP.” His comments underscored skepticism about the ADC’s capacity to replicate the LP’s recent electoral momentum, which saw Obi, a former state governor, emerge as a formidable third-force candidate.

Central to Baba-Ahmed’s stance was his unwavering support for Obi’s potential return as the LP’s flagbearer. Despite uncertainties about his own role, he called for party unity, stating, “Labour Party’s arms are open to welcome back Peter Obi. I would like Peter Obi to win the nomination of Labour Party and contest in 2027, with or without me.” The statement reflects ongoing efforts to consolidate the party’s base after its unexpectedly strong performance in the last election, which disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party system.

While the LP has not yet formalized its 2027 strategy, Baba-Ahmed’s openness to stepping aside signals a pragmatic approach to coalition-building and candidate selection. Political analysts note that his remarks may also hint at behind-the-scenes negotiations to strengthen opposition alliances ahead of the next election. However, he stopped short of endorsing any formal merger, instead reinforcing confidence in the LP’s existing structure.

The 2023 elections marked a turning point for Nigeria’s opposition, with Obi’s campaign galvanizing youth voters and urban constituencies. As debates over alliances and leadership intensify, Baba-Ahmed’s statements highlight the delicate balance between party loyalty and strategic realignments in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
