The ongoing investigation into the death of Nigerian musician Mohbad has taken a new turn as social media activist Vincent Otse Martins, widely known as Verydarkman, publicly challenged assertions made by the late singer’s brother, Adura Aloba, during a recent interview. Aloba had described finding Mohbad in distress on the day of his death in September 2023, recounting screams from the singer’s room and discovering him collapsed on the floor. The details, shared during an online interview, have reignited public scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In his response, Verydarkman questioned Aloba’s account, particularly his decision to wait for a nurse from Cotonou, a city in neighboring Benin Republic, rather than immediately contacting local emergency services in Lagos. “Calling for urgent medical assistance should have been the priority,” the activist argued, emphasizing that delays could have impacted the outcome. He also raised concerns about inconsistencies in reports of bloodstained clothing and bedding, referencing prior claims by Mohbad’s father and aunt about the scene.
The activist revealed he had attempted to engage Aloba directly but was informed through the interviewer that the brother declined to meet. Undeterred, Verydarkman urged his followers to persuade Aloba to reconsider, offering to cover travel costs and accommodation in Nigeria’s commercial capital. “All my prior discussions with individuals linked to this case were voluntary,” he stated, adding that he would travel to Lagos if needed.
Reiterating his stance as an unpaid advocate, Verydarkman denied allegations of financial motives, stressing his objective was to ensure accountability. “My role is to push for justice so Nigerians understand what truly happened,” he said. The activist also expressed surprise that Aloba chose another platform for the interview, noting, “I initiated the #JusticeForMohbad campaign when others had moved on. As his brother, what steps did you take when your family’s breadwinner was in crisis?”
Mohbad’s death at 27 sparked nationwide outcry, with fans and activists demanding answers amid allegations of foul play. The singer, formerly signed to Naira Marley’s Marlian Music, had publicly accused his ex-label of harassment prior to his passing, though no charges have been filed. Authorities exhumed his body for an autopsy, but results remain pending, leaving many questions unresolved.
Verydarkman’s interventions have kept the case in public discourse, blending social media advocacy with calls for transparency. His latest remarks underscore persistent doubts about the timelines and decisions described by those present during Mohbad’s final hours, as authorities continue their probe.
