Super Falcons Secure 10th WAFCON Title, Bolaji Claims Para-Badminton Gold

SWAN applauds Super Falcons’ WAFCON triumph

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been celebrated for making history at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing their 10th continental title with a hard-fought victory over host nation Morocco in Rabat. The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), in a statement by its National Secretary Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, praised the team’s resilience, highlighting their comeback performance in the final as a testament to national pride. Association President Isaiah Benjamin emphasized that the triumph reflects Nigeria’s capacity for excellence, urging stronger institutional support for sports to unlock economic potential.

“This victory is proof that with focus and unity, Nigeria can achieve greatness in any field,” Benjamin said, noting the Falcons’ ability to rally under pressure. He called for tangible rewards for players and coaching staff, stressing that strategic investment in sports could drive job creation and global visibility. The final, which drew fervent support from Nigerian fans despite its late-night conclusion, underscored what Benjamin described as “overwhelming public enthusiasm” for women’s football. “The dedication shown by spectators highlights the urgent need for upgraded facilities and youth development programs,” he added.

The association simultaneously spotlighted another milestone: para-badminton star Eniola Bolaji’s gold medal win at the 2025 British and Irish Para-Badminton International in Cardiff. Bolaji, a 2024 Paralympic bronze medalist, defeated world No. 1 Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh of Indonesia in the women’s SL3 category final. Benjamin commended her consistency, framing her success as part of a broader narrative of Nigerian athletic excellence. “Athletes like Eniola exemplify dedication. Sustained backing for them is essential to maintain this momentum,” he stated.

Both achievements arrive amid growing continental interest in women’s sports, with WAFCON 2024 setting attendance records and showcasing Africa’s evolving competitive landscape. SWAN’s dual recognition of team and individual triumphs reflects a push to amplify underrepresented disciplines, urging stakeholders to leverage sports as a tool for national development. As Nigeria reinforces its dominance in African football and para-sports, analysts emphasize the role of public-private partnerships in nurturing talent and ensuring athletes receive resources commensurate with their achievements.
