SDP Kaduna Refutes False El-Rufai 30-Year Banishment Report

You can’t speak for us – SDP disowns claim El-Rufai was banned for 30 years

The Kaduna State chapter of Nigeria’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) has dismissed as “false and unauthorized” media reports claiming that former Governor Nasir El-Rufai was expelled from the party for 30 years. The denial follows widespread online reports alleging El-Rufai, a polarizing ex-governor of Kaduna, faced expulsion from the SDP after purportedly promoting rival political groups.

In an official statement, Hon. Darius Kurah, the party’s Kaduna State Publicity Secretary, refuted the allegations, clarifying that the expulsion claim originated from an individual lacking authority to speak for the SDP. Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, who identified himself as the party’s National Publicity Secretary, was discredited by Kurah, who emphasized that Amb. Judith Shua’ibu remains the SDP’s sole recognized spokesperson. “Statements issued under Aiyenigba’s name are null and unauthorized,” the party asserted.

The SDP underscored its adherence to constitutional procedures for membership and discipline, stressing that El-Rufai had not been formally investigated or penalized by any authorized party body, including its National Working Committee or local ward officials. The party described the expulsion narrative as “baseless,” denying allegations that El-Rufai had campaigned for rival parties. While acknowledging the former governor’s engagement in national policy debates, officials noted he has not publicly presented himself as an SDP member in official forums.

The statement accused anonymous actors of circulating “politically motivated propaganda” to sow discord within the party and tarnish El-Rufai’s reputation. “This devious attempt to weaponize misinformation reflects a broader strategy to destabilize the SDP’s unity,” the party added. It confirmed El-Rufai’s compliance with membership protocols, including registration at his local ward, and dismissed claims to the contrary as “fabrications.”

El-Rufai, who left Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, has not formally announced alignment with any party since his departure. His rumored SDP affiliation has fueled speculation about his political future, particularly amid ongoing tensions between northern political elites and Nigeria’s federal government. The SDP, a minor opposition party, has sought to position itself as a reformist alternative ahead of potential electoral contests.

The incident highlights recurring challenges in Nigerian politics, where unauthorized statements and factional disputes often blur public perceptions. Analysts note that misinformation campaigns targeting high-profile figures like El-Rufai risk deepening voter apathy and eroding trust in democratic institutions. The SDP’s swift rebuttal underscores efforts to project cohesion amid Nigeria’s volatile political climate.
