Nigerian Legislative Conference rejects false suspension reports of Osun Assembly Speaker
The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has refuted claims that the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Adewale Egbedun, has been suspended. In a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, the Chairman of the conference, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin, dismissed the allegations as false, malicious, and an attempt to misinform the public.
An online blog had inaccurately reported that Egbedun was suspended from the Conference due to alleged insubordination and abuse of office. However, Ogundoyin clarified that no such suspension has taken place. He confirmed that no press conference was held, either in Ibadan or any other location, and no such statement was issued by him or any official representative of the Conference.
Ogundoyin described the Conference as a reputable and transparent organization that adheres to due process in all its activities, including disciplinary matters. He asserted that Egbedun is a respected and active member who has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing.
The Conference expressed disappointment in the conduct of online media, labeling the publication as “a baseless fabrication lacking any journalistic credibility.” Ogundoyin called on media outlets to act responsibly by verifying information before publishing reports that could damage reputations and mislead the public.
The Conference demanded a retraction and public apology from the blog and warned that legal action might be taken if the platform fails to correct the misleading narrative. Ogundoyin emphasized, “Freedom of the press comes with responsibility. Fake news must be tackled with urgency.”
This clarification comes amidst rising concerns about the spread of misinformation, particularly via online platforms, impacting the reputations of individuals and institutions alike.
