PDP Legal Adviser: Wike’s PDP Influence Exaggerated

'Wike unknown in PDP, can't stop Peter Obi' - Party chieftain, Mark

Nigeria’s PDP: Not Controlled by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Says Jacob Mark

A former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jacob Mark, has dismissed the notion that the party is under the control of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. Mark’s comments come as speculation mounts about the influence of the high-profile politician, who is serving in the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, on the PDP.

Appearing on Arise News, Mark addressed the belief that Wike is spearheading efforts to bring Peter Obi, a prominent presidential hopeful for the PDP in 2027, back into the fold. Mark refuted claims that Wike supports Obi’s candidacy, asserting that the minister’s sway within the PDP has been overstated.

“Wike is not a member of the PDP if his actions over the past year are any indication,” Mark stated. “He has not participated in any PDP meeting, and the party is functioning just fine without his input.”

Mark, speaking from Kaduna where he is attending a state caucus meeting to prepare for by-elections, stressed that Wike’s influence is negligible, especially in Northern states. “Wike is practically unknown in Kaduna and other northern states,” he remarked. “His power and control within the PDP are being exaggerated, and I’m not sure he fully understands the extent of his influence.”

The former legal adviser questioned how Wike exerts control over the PDP, suggesting that his power may be confined to certain factions within the party or be a result of personal relationships he has formed. Mark clarified that the PDP is undergoing significant reform and is regrouping to become the robust opposition Nigerians deserve.

Mark also celebrated the departure of certain individuals from the PDP, arguing that their exit has cleared the way for new blood and fresh ideas. He expressed confidence that the party’s strategic refocusing in the coming months will culminate in a more vibrant political organization.

Despite Mark’s critique, he acknowledged that Wike is a hardworking individual with the right to identify as a PDP member. However, Mark emphasized that Wike’s participation in PDP activities has been inconsistent, with his last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting attendance dating back over a year. Moreover, Mark pointed out that Wike has supported opponents of the PDP in various states, raising questions about his commitment to the party.

As the PDP continues to build its momentum towards the 2023 presidential election, Mark’s comments highlight the complex political landscape
