Muslim Group Condemns Attack on Cleric by Masquerader in Nigeria
The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria, has strongly condemned an assault on a Muslim cleric in Ogbomosho, Oyo State, during a cultural procession. The incident occurred when a masquerader, known locally as Lobanika, used a stick to forcefully remove the Imam’s cap while the cleric was peacefully observing the procession.
MPAC, in a statement issued on Friday by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, labeled the act as a “brazen disregard for civil norms and individual rights,” stating that it was both provocative and offensive to Islamic sensibilities. The group argued that the incident violated the Imam’s constitutional rights to dignity, religious freedom, and public safety.
The organization warned against the misuse of cultural traditions to camouflage lawlessness and religious intimidation. “No culture, tradition, or festival has the right to encroach upon the rights of any Nigerian,” the statement read. MPAC highlighted that the forcible removal of an Imam’s cap, a symbol of religious identity and modesty, was an affront to both human dignity and Islamic values.
MPAC called on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the incident and prosecute the masquerader and any accomplice. The group also urged the Oyo State Government to regulate masquerade festivals to ensure they respect the rights of all citizens and adhere to the law.
Furthermore, MPAC emphasized the need for community leaders to be held accountable when cultural events become platforms for harassment, violence, or extortion. While urging Muslims to remain peaceful and law-abiding, the group stressed that such provocations should not be misconstrued as a call for silence or submission.
“The Nigerian Constitution is the supreme law of the land,” Kamor stated, asserting that neither masquerades nor traditionalists are above the law.
MPAC pledged to continue advocating for the protection of Muslim communities and all peaceful citizens in Nigeria, affirming its commitment to seeking justice for the victim.
