Nigeria Expands Naval Presence to Bolster Security Along River Niger
The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to establish a new naval base in Yauri, Kebbi State, as part of a strategic initiative to enhance maritime security across the country. This expansion, to be situated along the strategically important River Niger, underscores the navy’s commitment to fortifying Nigeria’s defensive apparatus, particularly in the face of rising criminal activities exploiting the river as a trafficking route.
Delivering the news during a visit to Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, a delegation led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, the Chief of Naval Staff’s representative, affirmed that this move aligns with the navy’s expanded maritime strategy. The initiative, in addition to securing Nigeria’s offshore waters, aims to strengthen security within the country’s inland waterways.
Admiral Nwatu emphasized the significance of River Niger to Nigeria, noting its role in supporting agriculture and power generation, and providing sustenance for millions. Unfortunately, he stated, the same river has become susceptible to criminal elements exploiting it toHeighten insecurity in the country. It has emerged as a hub for illicit activities such as arms smuggling, which the navy aims to curb.
“The Nigerian Navy has decided to expand its presence along the River Niger by establishing a new base in Kebbi State,” Nwatu stated. “Currently, we have a base in Niger, but we’re expanding to ensure we have a complete presence along this important waterway.”
Governor Idris welcomed the news, describing the naval base as a “very good and holistic development” in light of the security challenges facing the southern parts of Kebbi State. He acknowledged that while the state has never housed a naval base before, the Chief of Naval Staff’s decision to establish one in Yauri is a testament to the strategic significance of the river. As a border state with Niger and Benin Republics, both of which grapple with security issues, Kebbi recognizes the need for enhanced security measures to safeguard its citizens and the vital River Niger.
The governor, grateful for the navy’s commitment, assured the delegation that Kebbi State would provide all necessary support to facilitate the base’s establishment. In anticipation of the permanent structure’s construction, the state will offer temporary accommodation to facilitate the navy’s prompt take-off.
With the new base, Nigeria aims to bolster its security architecture, particularly in the Northwest region, and demonstrate its resolve to combat transnational crime and insurgency threats that have long plagued the country and the broader West African sub-region.
