Anambra APGA-APC Supporters Clash Over Billboard Destruction

APGA, APC supporters clash in Anambra community over pulled-down billboard

A violent clash erupted between supporters of rival political parties in Nigeria’s Anambra State on Friday, disrupting a weekend of campaign activities in the Nri community. Supporters of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged in conflict after accusations of billboard vandalism, requiring police intervention to prevent further escalation.

The dispute unfolded as both groups held separate events. APGA supporters, led by a prominent lawyer identified as Ezeafia, hosted their governorship candidate, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. Concurrently, Senator Uche Ekwunife, running mate to APC candidate Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, organized a gathering for their own supporters. Tensions flared when APC members alleged that APGA followers had torn down three campaign billboards. Reports indicate the confrontation spiraled into physical violence, prompting local law enforcement to deploy officers to restore order.

Anambra State Police Command spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed in a statement that Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu summoned representatives from both parties for a peace meeting. “A mutual agreement was reached to replace the removed billboards without delay,” Ikenga said, though APGA supporters reportedly defended their actions by citing unpaid signage fees as justification for removing the APC materials.

Authorities emphasized the need for political campaigns to adhere to legal frameworks. CP Orutugu warned against further disruptions and referred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department’s Political Desk for further review, aiming to ensure compliance with the resolution.

The incident highlights heightened political tensions in Anambra ahead of key elections, with rival factions jostling for visibility in strategic locations. Billboards and campaign materials often serve as symbols of political influence in Nigeria’s electoral contests, making their removal a flashpoint for conflict. Local observers note the clash underscores broader challenges in managing partisan rivalries amid tight campaign schedules.

While no injuries or arrests were reported, the episode has drawn attention to the role of security agencies in mediating electoral disputes. The police command reiterated its commitment to maintaining public order, urging candidates and their supporters to prioritize peaceful engagement. As investigations proceed, residents remain cautious, hoping the resolution will deter further violence in the lead-up to the polls.
