Portable Slams VeryDarkMan Over Mohbad Justice Campaign Controversy

Nigerian musician Habeeb Okikiola, widely recognized by his stage name Portable, has openly criticized social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), for allegedly fueling controversies surrounding the death of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, professionally known as Mohbad. The 27-year-old artist, whose September 2023 passing under unresolved circumstances sparked nationwide outcry, remains central to a simmering public debate about accountability and justice in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

In a recently circulated video statement, Portable accused VDM of manipulating public sentiment, claiming the activist initially positioned himself as a champion for Mohbad but subsequently shifted focus to personal disputes. “You came out deceiving Nigerians that you want justice for Mohbad. You’re a manipulator,” said the “Zazu” singer, alleging VDM’s recent targeting of actress Iyabo Ojo—a vocal advocate for the “Justice for Mohbad” movement—has diverted attention from the campaign’s core objectives. Portable argued that VDM’s frequent critiques of Ojo undermined efforts to clarify the circumstances of Mohbad’s death, which included allegations of bullying prior to his demise.

The feud intensified as Portable referenced VDM’s earlier claims implicating unnamed individuals in Mohbad’s death, only to later “make a U-turn.” He questioned the activist’s motives: “Why are you now going against Mohbad? Leave him to rest in peace. We know who bullied him.” The musician emphasized public discernment, stating Nigerians could identify both perpetrators and credible voices in the case without VDM’s intervention.

Mohbad’s death, linked to a reported altercation and untreated injury, has remained a flashpoint in Nigerian media, with fans and celebrities demanding a thorough investigation. While VDM initially garnered support for amplifying these calls, critics like Portable now accuse him of exploiting the tragedy for clout. The activist has yet to publicly respond to the latest allegations.

As tensions persist, the discourse highlights broader concerns about accountability in Nigeria’s entertainment sector, where rivalries and online activism frequently intersect. Observers note the “Justice for Mohbad” campaign remains fragile, with public trust contingent on transparent dialogue—a goal Portable insists requires sidelining what he deems “deceptive” narratives.
