Instagram Reels Rolls Out TikTok-Inspired Reposts Globally

Instagram has launched a global rollout of a repost feature for Reels, mirroring TikTok’s model of content sharing in a bid to amplify user engagement. The tool, now widely available, allows users to reshare short-form videos directly to their followers’ feeds and a dedicated “reposts” section on profiles, marking a strategic shift toward streamlining viral content distribution.

Prior to this update, Instagram users relied on time-limited Story shares or collaborative posts requiring mutual approval. The new repost function eliminates those constraints, enabling one-click sharing similar to TikTok’s approach. Reposted Reels will appear in friends’ feeds and within the platform’s expanded “friends” tab, a feature previously criticized for cluttering the interface. The move aligns with Meta’s broader focus on prioritizing Reels, which have become central to Instagram’s competition with rival platforms.

Meta confirmed testing the feature in June after TechCrunch reported early trials as far back as 2022. The company’s decision to fast-track the global release underscores its urgency to capitalize on Reels’ growth, particularly as platforms like YouTube and TikTok dominate short-form video engagement.

However, the update has drawn mixed reactions. While some users welcome streamlined sharing, critics argue the platform risks overwhelming feeds with repetitive content and ads. TechCrunch noted longstanding user frustration with Instagram’s feature-heavy interface, which already includes Stories, Notes, and Broadcast Channels. Critics argue each addition dilutes the app’s original focus on photo-sharing, a tension Meta has navigated since pivoting to video-centric content in 2020.

Analysts suggest the repost feature could boost creator visibility by amplifying viral trends, though it may also centralize attention around popular accounts. The update coincides with Instagram’s growing emphasis on AI-driven tools, including enhanced editing features rivaling apps like CapCut. Meta has yet to clarify whether reposted content will affect its algorithmic recommendations or ad placements.

As Instagram evolves, its balancing act between innovation and usability remains under scrutiny. The repost tool’s adoption could determine whether Meta succeeds in keeping Reels competitive—or further alienates users wary of a fragmented, ad-saturated experience.
