Kano State has greenlit a ₦14.8 billion ($11.8 million) investment in infrastructure and public services, targeting healthcare, education, and energy upgrades to bolster community welfare. The State Executive Council announced the approvals during a Friday briefing led by Commissioner for Information and Strategies Ibrahim Waiya, who outlined plans to renovate hospitals, expand rural healthcare access, and modernize educational facilities.

Key allocations include ₦364 million for revamping Jakara’s Sabo Bakin Zuwo maternity hospital and ₦272 million to refurbish a newly acquired building at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. Five maternity centers statewide will receive solar energy systems worth ₦113 million to ensure uninterrupted power, while ₦112 million is set aside for medical supplies at Hasiya Bayero, Murtala Muhammad, and Yadakunya hospitals.

Educational infrastructure upgrades feature prominently, with ₦294 million earmarked for renovations at Bebeji’s School of Health Technology and ₦128 million allocated for equipment at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital. Rural communities will benefit from a ₦379 million expansion of Zakirai Primary Health Care Centre and ₦169 million to rehabilitate mini earth dams in five districts, aimed at improving water access for agriculture and domestic use.

The council also addressed operational needs, approving ₦310 million for diesel and petroleum purchases in early 2025 to prevent fuel shortages. In a parallel fiscal move, officials ratified a ₦889.3 billion supplementary budget for 2025, a 23.5% increase from the initial ₦719.8 billion framework. Waiya emphasized that the adjustment aims to enhance governance efficiency and address “emerging obligations,” with the proposal now forwarded to the State Assembly for swift legislative review.

These measures reflect the state’s push to strengthen public service delivery amid Nigeria’s economic challenges, prioritizing healthcare accessibility and infrastructure resilience. The coordinated investments, if implemented effectively, could improve living standards in one of the country’s most populous states.
