In Greece, authorities reported over 100 wildfires igniting within a 48-hour period, prompting the evacuation of at least 7,500 residents in the Achaia region alone. Firefighters, supported by 33 aircraft and nearly 5,000 personnel, have battled blazes that have injured civilians and destroyed homes. Dramatic footage shows flames encroaching on residential areas and countryside, with crews working through the night to protect communities.
Spain’s Castile and Leon regions have borne the brunt of the crisis, where wildfires have ravaged more than 39,000 hectares of land. Over 5,000 people were evacuated, and the fires claimed the lives of a volunteer firefighter near Nogarejas and a man in Tres Cantos, a Madrid suburb. Emergency teams deployed helicopters and ground crews to shield towns and cultural landmarks from advancing flames.
Italy, Montenegro, and other southern European nations are also scrambling to contain outbreaks. Near Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, military and firefighting units worked to control fires in hillside areas. In Italy, water-dropping aircraft targeted flames threatening historic sites. Meanwhile, Portugal, Croatia, Turkey, Albania, and the UK have reported smaller but persistent fires, exacerbated by dry conditions and climbing temperatures. France and Croatia logged new heat records this week, with thermometers hitting unprecedented levels in some regions.
The recurring heatwaves, linked by scientists to broader climate patterns, have tested Europe’s infrastructure, from energy grids to healthcare systems. Prolonged drought and tinder-like vegetation have turned vast areas into fire-prone zones, amplifying risks for agricultural economies.
