Nigeria’s Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment to Leveraging ICT Infrastructure for National Development

In a move aimed at accelerating the country’s digital transformation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a circular reaffirming its commitment to leveraging the substantial investment in the National Information Communications Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NICTIB) for the benefit of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

According to Chidi Okpala, spokesperson for Galaxy Backbone Ltd, the directive, issued in line with the Nigeria First Policy, endorses Galaxy Backbone Limited as the designated provider of ICT infrastructure for federal government institutions. This development is expected to enhance the quality, reliability, and innovation of ICT services provided to MDAs, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth.

Professor Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Ltd, expressed the agency’s readiness to actualize the Nigeria First Policy in the country’s ICT sector. “We have repositioned our organization to provide tailored digital infrastructure solutions that meet the unique needs of each agency, while ensuring Nigeria’s data remains safe within our borders,” he said.

The Nigeria First Policy aims to promote the use of locally developed ICT solutions and services, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on foreign technologies. By implementing this policy, the federal government hopes to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation and contribute directly to national economic growth.

Galaxy Backbone Ltd, established by the Federal Government, has been mandated to ensure data sovereignty through a centralized e-government platform that offers secure connectivity and related ICT services. The agency’s core mandate aligns with the government’s vision of harnessing ICT to drive national development.

This latest development underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging ICT to drive economic growth, improve governance, and enhance the overall quality of life for Nigerians. As the country continues to navigate the complexities of the digital age, the effective utilization of ICT infrastructure will play a critical role in achieving these objectives.

By reaffirming its commitment to the NICTIB, the Federal Government has taken a significant step towards harnessing the potential of ICT to drive national development. As the country moves forward, it is expected that the effective implementation of the Nigeria First Policy will yield positive results, ultimately contributing to the growth and prosperity of the nation.
