Benue State’s Local Governments Enjoy Financial Autonomy, Says Special Adviser
In a recent interaction with journalists, Mr Denen Aondoakaa, Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State on Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, emphasized that local governments in the state operate with financial autonomy. This assertion was made during a meeting with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue Council, in Makurdi on Monday.
Aondoakaa clarified that the Bureau’s role is limited to coordinating the affairs of local governments, ensuring order and stability in their operations. He stressed that local governments in Benue State execute their projects and programs without interference, utilizing their resources according to their individual financial strengths.
The special adviser noted that the finances allocated to each local government vary, and as such, they are managed based on the specific needs and capabilities of each local government area. He further revealed that local government chairmen were provided with official vehicles prior to his appointment.
Interestingly, some chairmen have donated their vehicles to security agencies to support patrol efforts aimed at curbing insecurity in their domains. Additionally, some chairmen have even purchased motorcycles to augment these efforts, demonstrating their commitment to addressing security concerns in their areas.
Aondoakaa’s statement underscores the Benue State government’s commitment to empowering local governments and promoting self-sufficiency. This approach is expected to foster more effective governance and service delivery at the grassroots level, ultimately benefiting the people of Benue State.
The emphasis on financial autonomy for local governments in Benue State highlights the importance of decentralization and the need for local authorities to take ownership of their development processes. As the country continues to navigate the challenges of governance and development, Benue State’s approach may serve as a model for other states seeking to enhance local governance and community development.
