Abia State Government Cracks Down on Falsehood Peddlers, Vows Prosecution
In a bid to stem the tide of misinformation and fake news, the Abia State government has pledged to crack down on individuals spreading falsehood about the State. Commissioner for Information Okey Kanu disclosed this during a briefing with journalists, following an executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
While acknowledging that the State would not resort to past methods of arrest and dehumanization of citizens, Kanu emphasized that the government would no longer tolerate the dissemination of false information. “We will not fold our arms and watch individuals with malicious intentions cause disaffection among our citizens,” he said.
Kanu highlighted a trending pattern of false publications against the Abia State government and vowed to hold those responsible accountable. “Those behind these publications will no longer be allowed to continue their actions,” he stated. The Commissioner reassured the public that the Alex Otti administration remains committed to transparency, with no information being hidden from the people of Abia.
In a separate development, Kanu announced the swearing-in of Friday Kalu Ohuche as the Chief Economic Adviser of Abia State. He also revealed that the State’s economic management team had been inaugurated by Governor Otti. The Commissioner clarified that the inauguration of the economic management team did not abolish the roles of the Abia global economic advisory council, which includes distinguished members such as the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Mohammad, Arunma Otteh, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Bolaji Balogun.
The Abia State government’s move to tackle falsehood and misinformation underscores the importance of accurate and responsible communication in governance. As the State government works to maintain transparency and trust, it remains clear that the spread of false information will be met with serious consequences. With the nomination of key economic advisors, the government also signals its commitment to economic growth and development.
In a region where misinformation can have significant social, economic, and political implications, the Abia State government’s initiative to address this issue is a welcome development. By promoting transparency and accountability, the government aims to foster a more informed and engaged citizenry.
