Nigeria Takes Major Step towards Clean Energy with 40,000 CBM LPG Vessel Commissioning
In a significant move to boost clean energy supply in Nigeria and beyond, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), have highlighted the importance of commissioning WAGL Energy Limited’s 40,000 cubic metre (CBM) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel. The vessel, named “MT Iyaloja (Lagos),” was commissioned on Monday in Ulsan, South Korea.
According to President Tinubu, represented by Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, the vessel’s commissioning marks a major milestone in expanding Africa’s role in clean energy. The President commended WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Sahara Group, for their foresight and dedication to driving clean energy efforts.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL Bayo Ojulari, represented by the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, described the vessel as a vital addition to Nigeria’s gas development efforts. He emphasized that the vessel will play a crucial role in realizing the impact of gas in Nigeria’s economic development. As a major shareholder in WAGL Energy Limited, NNPCL is proud of the company’s growth, with the newly commissioned vessel joining four other LPG vessels in its fleet, delivering over 6 million MT of LPG across West Africa in the last five years.
WAGL’s Chairman and Executive Director at Sahara Group, Temitope Shonubi, noted that the company’s expansion demonstrates its vision of responsibly driving efforts to bridge the continent’s critical energy infrastructure gap. With the commissioning of the MT Iyaloja (Lagos) vessel, WAGL Energy Limited is poised to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth and the global clean energy market.
The commissioning of the vessel is a strategic move to increase Nigeria’s LPG supply and meet the growing energy demands in the region. It also underscores the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions. The 40,000 CBM LPG vessel is expected to enhance WAGL’s capacity to deliver clean energy to Nigeria, Africa, and the global market, aligning with the company’s mission to bridge the energy infrastructure gap in the continent.
