Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has unveiled plans to revamp the education sector in the capital territory. The move is part of the FCT Administration’s efforts to spread development beyond the city center and into satellite towns.
Speaking at the commissioning of the newly rehabilitated Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant at Lower Usuma Dam in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, Wike announced that he has directed the FCT Mandate Secretary on Education to release a comprehensive list of schools that have been renovated or are currently undergoing renovation. The minister believes that once the list is made public, Nigerians will have a better understanding of the ongoing efforts to improve the education sector.
Wike emphasized that his administration is not solely focused on road projects, but rather on making life better for the people of FCT and its environs. He noted that President Bola Tinubu had signed an agreement with China’s CGC in 2024 to provide portable water for the satellite towns, and that the project will kick off soon. The initiative is expected to cost the government at least N90 billion.
“We are not concentrating on the development of the city alone; we are taking development to the satellite towns,” Wike stated. “I have told the Mandate Secretary of Education to release the number of schools in the entire FCT under the Tinubu administration that we have completed renovations and the ongoing ones. I believe by the time that list is released, Nigerians would know what we have done in the education sector.”
The FCT Minister also invited the press to visit rural communities and witness the transformation of schools in these areas. He assured that his administration is committed to providing essential amenities, including water and quality education, to the people of FCT.
The upcoming water project, which will be flagged off in Bwari and Karu, is part of the government’s efforts to make life easier for the people of FCT. With the FCT Administration’s renewed focus on education and infrastructure development, residents of the capital territory can look forward to improved living conditions and a brighter future.
By prioritizing education and spreading development beyond the city center, the FCT Administration is taking a crucial step towards creating a more equitable and sustainable society. As the government continues to invest in key sectors, the people of FCT can expect to see tangible improvements in their daily lives.
