Nigeria’s AEC Unity Network Limited Set to Commence Work on $4 Billion Abuja-Lagos Superhighway
In a significant development poised to transform Nigeria’s transportation landscape, AEC Unity Network Limited has expressed confidence that work on its proposed 470-kilometre Abuja-Lagos Superhighway will commence soon. The $4 billion project is expected to slash travel time between Nigeria’s two busiest cities, Abuja and Lagos.
According to Dr Kenny Martins, Chairman of AEC Unity Network Limited, the superhighway will provide a safer, faster, and more reliable alternative to existing road networks. Designed for vehicles to move at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, the highway is set to drastically reduce the hours spent on the road. “This is more than just a road. The Abuja-Lagos Superhighway will be a transformational infrastructure project that changes the way people and goods move between the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos,” Martins explained.
The superhighway will span across nine states, including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with additional spurs to Ondo State and Baro Port in Niger State. This move is projected to boost regional trade and logistics, opening up rural communities, creating jobs, and unlocking new economic opportunities across the states it traverses.
Dr Martins emphasized that the project is being implemented in collaboration with key government agencies, including the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and the Federal Ministry of Works, under the supervision of Minister Dave Umahi. Once operational, the road is expected to help decongest existing corridors, reducing the cost and stress of moving commuters and cargo between Abuja and Lagos.
Martins underscored the significance of the project, stating, “This road is not just for today but for future generations. By the grace of God, very soon Nigerians will be driving on this superhighway.” As Nigeria’s population continues to grow, infrastructure projects like the Abuja-Lagos Superhighway are critical to supporting economic growth, improving living standards, and enhancing the overall quality of life for its citizens.
