Nyesom Wike Vows to Resist Blackmail, Deliver Development to Abuja Residents

No amount of blackmail will distract me – Wike — Daily Nigerian

Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to remain focused on delivering development to the people of Abuja, despite attempts to blackmail him through sponsored protests. Speaking at the inauguration of the Phase 2 water project in Abuja, Wike emphasized that his administration will not be intimidated into paying claims that were never legitimately awarded.

The minister noted that several media reports have highlighted alleged debts owed to local contractors, but he stressed that many of these debts were generated by civil servants who awarded contracts without ministerial approval. Wike challenged those claiming to have been awarded contracts to produce the necessary documents, stating that his administration will not be blackmailed into paying for illegitimate claims.

Under Wike’s leadership, the Federal Capital Territory’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has increased significantly, rising from N9 billion to over N30 billion monthly. The minister attributed this growth to his administration’s prudent management of funds, which has enabled the commissioning of massive infrastructure projects.

Wike also highlighted the issue of abandoned projects in Abuja, which he attributed to the diversion of funds into unnecessary expenses such as frequent foreign trips and inflated procurement of items like computers. He emphasized that his administration is committed to restoring discipline, blocking waste, and redirecting resources into tangible development for the Federal Capital Territory.

The minister’s stance has been met with resistance from some quarters, with protests and media reports attempting to discredit his administration. However, Wike remains resolute, stating that he will not be swayed by vested interests or power brokers. He emphasized that his administration is committed to delivering results, not seeking popularity or personal gain.

As Wike’s administration continues to push forward with its development agenda, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold. One thing is clear, however: the minister is determined to leave a lasting legacy in the Federal Capital Territory, one that will be remembered for years to come.
