Nigeria’s Opposition Party Vows to Unseat Ruling Party in 2027 Elections

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Nigeria has expressed confidence that citizens will reject the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, citing hunger, insecurity, and poverty as key issues that will sway votes.

Speaking at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, accused the APC of using the recent by-elections as a test run for the 2027 elections, but expressed optimism that the party would be disappointed. “What happened in those by-elections will not happen in 2027,” Ologunagba said. “Nigerians are wiser now and will resist any attempts to manipulate them with inducements.”

Ologunagba also accused the APC of exploiting poverty to influence voter decisions, stressing that Nigerians are feeling the pain of hunger, uncertainty, and insecurity, which he believes will be the deciding factors in the 2027 elections. “The APC has been a source of pain for Nigeria for over 10 years now, and Nigerians will not forget that when they cast their votes,” he said.

The PDP spokesman further alleged that security agencies were being used to intimidate opposition members during the by-elections, which aimed to fill 16 vacant state and national assembly seats across 13 states.

Regarding speculation about a parallel PDP convention, Ologunagba dismissed the reports as baseless rumors. He maintained that the party’s national convention will take place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, as planned, following a decision made at the NEC meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance.

In a final jab at the APC, Ologunagba claimed that the ruling party becomes anxious whenever it perceives unity within the PDP, but insisted that attempts to create divisions within the party will ultimately fail.

The PDP’s assertions come as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, which are expected to be a significant test for the country’s democratic processes. With tensions running high, it remains to be seen whether the PDP’s confidence will translate into a decisive victory.
