Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company Seeks Immediate Suspension of Enugu Tariff Order
Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company has formally petitioned the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) to suspend the recently implemented tariff reduction order. The company, in a petition dated August 14, 2025, argues that the order, which reduced the tariff for Band A customers from N209/kwh to N160.40/kwh, will have a significant and irreversible adverse business impact.
According to Mainpower, the tariff order was published without agreement on key parameters and did not comply with the Regulation No. EERC/R004: Enugu State Regulatory Commission: Methodology for Tariff Regulation, 2024. The company’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, stated that the company had never agreed with the EERC on certain key parameters with huge sensitivity effect.
The petition outlined some of the potential impacts of the tariff order, including an average monthly revenue shortfall of between N1.3 billion and N1.5 billion, resulting in a cumulative gap of about N6.98 billion over five months. Mainpower also warned of potential disconnection of supply to the Enugu State Electricity Market and a heightened risk of industrial action.
Mainpower has asked the EERC to suspend the tariff order pending the determination of its case, as well as review and approve either Scenario 1 of N206.80/Kwh or Scenario 2 of N194.54/Kwh as contained in its petition. The company believes that the current tariff order would lead to business sustainability risks, reduced funding for critical infrastructure, and potential dissatisfaction with service levels.
This move is in line with previous concerns raised by stakeholders, including the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Generation Companies (Gencos), and other distribution companies, who have all described the tariff reduction order as unsustainable.
As the EERC considers Mainpower’s petition, the outcome will likely have a significant impact on the electricity industry in Enugu State, and stakeholders will be watching closely for the final decision.
