Nigerian Opposition Party Accuses Ruling Party of Widespread Vote Buying

Allegations of vote buying have marred Nigeria’s recent by-elections, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) claiming that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged in the practice on a large scale. Dr. Ibrahim Mani, a chieftain of the ADC, made the allegations during an interview on Trust TV, stating that his party’s monitoring of polling units revealed widespread voter inducement, with the APC being the major beneficiary.

According to Dr. Mani, the APC’s vote-buying tactics were particularly egregious in Kano, where the ruling party in the state also bought votes. He attributed the prevalence of vote buying to the deliberate impoverishment of citizens by politicians, making them vulnerable to inducements during elections. “They have so impoverished the people to the extent that the end game is to use this poverty against them and then bring out money to induce voters during elections,” Dr. Mani explained.

The ADC chieftain claimed that in some polling units, voters were given as much as ₦20,000 each, a significant improvement from the last elections, where voters were offered spaghetti and macaroni. Despite the challenges, Dr. Mani noted that his party’s participation in the elections provided valuable insight into the electoral process. “We are still rolling out structures, mobilising and creating an environment that will make Nigerians have confidence in the electoral system,” he said.

The allegations of vote buying have raised concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. The ADC’s accusations against the APC highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in the country’s elections. As Nigeria prepares for future elections, it is essential that measures are taken to prevent vote buying and ensure that the electoral process is free and fair.

Dr. Mani’s comments also underscore the importance of addressing poverty and inequality in Nigeria. By deliberately impoverishing citizens, politicians can manipulate them into voting for their preferred candidates. The ADC’s allegations serve as a reminder that the fight against poverty and corruption is closely tied to the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.

In conclusion, the allegations of vote buying levelled by the ADC against the APC have significant implications for Nigeria’s democratic process. As the country moves forward, it is essential that measures are taken to prevent vote buying and ensure that elections are free and fair. Addressing poverty and inequality is also crucial to preventing the manipulation of citizens during elections. By working together to address these challenges, Nigeria can build a more robust and inclusive democracy.
