Concerns Over Potential Alliance: APC Chieftain Warns of Weakened Party Chances in 2027 Elections

A possible alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi could pose a significant threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. This warning was issued by Dominic Alancha, a chieftain of the APC, in an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ program.

Alancha’s concerns stem from the recent adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition platform by opposition leaders, including Atiku and Obi. This move is aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu, whose administration has faced criticism over economic management, including inflation and a soaring cost of living.

The coalition is relying on the combined strength of Atiku and Obi, who together polled more than 12 million votes in 2023 – over four million more than Tinubu. Alancha noted that if the two opposition leaders can align and agree on a single ticket, it could significantly deplete the APC’s support base.

“In 2027, the dynamics may not be the same as what happened in 2023. If Peter Obi and Atiku can align, have a consensus amongst themselves and agree on a single ticket, I’m telling you it’s going to deplete our support base because, at the table, they already have over 13 to 14 million votes,” Alancha warned.

He emphasized that preparation is key to success, stating that the APC must begin preparing for the elections now or risk failing. Alancha also cautioned that while things may seem quiet now, serious issues will arise once campaigns commence.

The adoption of the ADC as a coalition platform by opposition leaders is seen as a strategic move to challenge the APC’s dominance. The coalition’s reliance on the combined strength of Atiku and Obi underscores the potential threat it poses to the ruling party.

As the 2027 elections approach, the APC will need to address its internal challenges and position itself for success. With the opposition coalition gaining momentum, the stakes are high for the ruling party, and any miscalculation could have significant consequences.

The coming months will be crucial in determining the fate of the APC and the outcome of the 2027 elections. As the country waits with bated breath, one thing is clear: the potential alliance between Atiku and Obi has sent a warning signal to the APC, and it would be wise to take heed.
