Kaduna Bye-Elections Deemed “Free, Fair, and Transparent” by Election Observers
Nigeria’s democratic journey has taken a significant step forward with the recent bye-elections in Kaduna State, which have been commended by election observers as “free, fair, and transparent”. The polls, monitored by the Coalition of Rights Groups and Election Monitors across various local government areas, have been hailed as a remarkable improvement in the country’s electoral process.
According to Amina Mohammed, spokesperson for the Civil Rights and Democracy Watch (CRDW), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) performed satisfactorily, ensuring timely arrival of materials, adherence to guidelines, and prompt transmission of results. Mohammed stated that the Kaduna elections had set a positive example in the North-West, with observers reporting minimal cases of irregularities that did not significantly affect the overall outcome.
The professionalism of security agencies was also commended by Mr. Peter Okafor, National Coordinator, Network of Election Observers (NEO). Okafor noted that the presence of security operatives across polling units reassured voters and discouraged malpractice. He congratulated Governor Uba Sani on his recent victory, urging him to deliver dividends of democracy to all stakeholders.
The endorsement from both local and international monitors has bolstered Governor Uba Sani’s mandate, reinforcing confidence in the democratic process. The observers also called on opposition parties to respect the will of the people and join hands in building a peaceful and prosperous Kaduna State.
The successful conduct of the bye-elections in Kaduna State is a testament to Nigeria’s progress in consolidating its democracy. The transparency and credibility of the electoral process have been enhanced, and the peaceful conduct of the polls is a reflection of the citizens’ commitment to democratic values. As Nigeria continues on its democratic journey, the lessons learned from the Kaduna bye-elections will be invaluable in strengthening the electoral process and deepening citizen engagement.
The international community has also taken note of the commendable conduct of the Kaduna bye-elections, which demonstrates Nigeria’s capacity to hold free and fair elections. The outcome of the polls has sent a strong message about the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy and the determination of its citizens to exercise their right to vote.
