RMAFC Reviews Remuneration for Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders

Nigeria’s Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has embarked on a strategic retreat in Kano State to review remuneration packages for the country’s political, public, and judicial office holders. The three-day retreat aims to harmonize reports from various stakeholders, including memoranda, public hearings, and ministerial submissions, to establish a comprehensive framework for implementation.

Mohammed Usman, Chairman of RMAFC and Federal Commissioner representing Gombe State, emphasized the significance of the assignment, stating that the review process is crucial for the stability and growth of Nigeria’s governance structure. The 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the commission to determine suitable remuneration for office holders at all levels.

Usman explained that the commission had previously taken steps towards reviewing the remuneration package to reflect current economic realities. “We carefully considered a wide range of perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings, and ministerial submissions, while also drawing from economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries,” he said.

The review process, according to Usman, is not only about adjusting figures but also about ensuring sustainability and affordability. “We analysed the capacity of the government to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic, and sustainable,” he added.

The committee has been directed to harmonize the earlier report and subsequent addendum into a single document, providing a clear and comprehensive framework for implementation. Usman urged members to contribute their diverse experience and knowledge, emphasizing that the retreat must produce outcomes that are balanced and beneficial to all.

The RMAFC retreat is expected to establish a sustainable framework for remunerating Nigeria’s political, public, and judicial office holders, aligning with the commission’s mandate. This development is anticipated to have a positive impact on the country’s governance structure, promoting stability and growth.

The review of remuneration packages for office holders in Nigeria has been a subject of discussion for some time, with various stakeholders advocating for adjustments to reflect the country’s economic realities. The RMAFC’s efforts are expected to bring about a more equitable and sustainable remuneration system, supporting the growth and development of Nigeria’s governance structure.
