Nigeria’s Electoral Commission Issues Certificates of Return to Bye-Election Winners

In a ceremony held at its headquarters in Abuja, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presented Certificates of Return to seven winners of the National Assembly bye-elections. The bye-elections took place on August 16, 2025, with the winners set to represent various constituencies across Nigeria in the Senate and House of Representatives.

National Commissioners of the Commission presented the certificates to the newly elected lawmakers, marking a significant step in the electoral process. Mr. Kenneth Ukeagu, National Commissioner supervising the South East, presented the Certificate of Return to Mr. Nwachukwu Emmanuel Chibuzor of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), winner of the Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election.

Other winners who received their Certificates of Return include Ikpea Joseph Igiagbe, Senator-elect for Edo Central, and Igbinedion Omosede Gabriella, House of Representatives member-elect for Ovia Southwest, both of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Professor Abdullahi Zuru, National Commissioner supervising the North West, presented the certificate to Mukhtar Rabiu Garki, winner of the Bubura/Garki constituency in Jigawa State, also of the APC.

Mal. Kudu Haruna presented the certificate to Joseph Bagudu, elected to represent Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State under the All Progressives Congress. Additionally, National Commissioner supervising the South West, Professor Kunle Ajayi, presented Certificates of Return to Elegbeji Adesola Yetunde Ayoola, elected to represent Ikene/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, and Oyekunle Fola Sunday, elected for Ibadan North Federal Constituency, both of the APC.

The winners of the State Constituency bye-elections are scheduled to receive their Certificates of Return from the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of their respective states on Friday, August 22, 2025. This development marks a crucial milestone in the electoral process, paving the way for the newly elected lawmakers to assume their duties in the National Assembly.
