Enugu Governor Unveils Rebuilt Hotel Presidential After 15-Year Hiatus

Nigerian State of Enugu Revamps Historic Hotel as Part of Growth Plan

The Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially unveiled the reconstructed 100-room Hotel Presidential in Enugu, the state capital. This historic hotel was first established in 1963 by the then premier of the old eastern region, Michael Okpara. Following 15 years of inactivity, the hotel’s revival is seen as a significant step towards fulfilling the governor’s campaign promise to recover and revitalize Enugu’s moribund assets and exponentially grow the state’s economy.

Mbah stated that the hotel’s revival is part of the administration’s broader growth plan, which includes ambitious targets such as growing Enugu’s economy sevenfold to at least $30 billion and achieving a zero per cent poverty headcount rate. To ensure the hotel’s sustainability, a public-private partnership has been established, setting up systems for top-notch class and service delivery.

“This unveiling is more than just opening the doors of a hotel; it is the reopening of Enugu’s confidence,” Mbah said. “It is a tangible sign that when we say Enugu is open for business, we mean business.” He also emphasized the administration’s commitment to maintaining world-class standards in hospitality infrastructure, reflecting the same credibility as its policies.

The Hotel Presidential’s revival is part of a larger vision to make Enugu the conferencing capital of Africa, with the aim of welcoming up to three million annual tourist visits. Other key projects, such as the 5,000-seat International Conference Centre (ICC) and the adjacent five-star, 345-room ICC Hotel, are also underway. Enugu Air has also launched operations, connecting the state with the rest of the world. Mbah pointed out that these projects are not isolated but interconnected initiatives aimed at creating a comprehensive hospitality ecosystem.

The economic benefits of these developments are already apparent, with the Hotel Presidential alone generating hundreds of direct jobs and various opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs. The hotel’s operations are expected to further stimulate the local economy by attracting tourists and visitors, promoting the state’s rich cultural heritage, including its art, music, cuisine, and warmth.

The Hotel Presidential’s reconstruction and reopening are a testament to the administration’s dedication to harnessing the state’s full potential and creating a thriving business environment. By prioritizing the revival of this historic landmark, Enugu State is taking significant strides towards repositioning itself as a major economic hub in Africa.
