Nigeria’s 2023 Labour Party Presidential Running Mate Open to Contesting with Peter Obi in 2027
Datti Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, has expressed his willingness to contest with Obi again in 2027. Baba-Ahmed made this statement during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he emphasized that his decision is contingent upon improvements in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate highlighted his unwavering dedication to Nigeria, stating, “If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow, my love for Nigeria is undying.” Baba-Ahmed also underscored his intention to collaborate with like-minded individuals and groups.
Regarding the possibility of teaming up with Obi once more, Baba-Ahmed was resolute, stating, “Absolutely, if you had heard what I was saying on air two months ago, there are two individuals that I would succumb to. The first has not said, so I won’t say it on his behalf, and the second one is Peter Obi and always Peter Obi until he decides not to.”
When questioned about potentially partnering with Rotimi Amaechi, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s politics, Baba-Ahmed clarified that Amaechi was not the individual he was referring to. He added, “Amaechi is a good guy,” and went on to say, “By the way, why do you think that I have to be a deputy? Don’t keep looking at me like a deputy.”
Baba-Ahmed’s comments suggest that he is open to exploring possibilities with Obi in the future, provided that the electoral landscape in Nigeria undergoes significant improvements. As the country looks ahead to the 2027 presidential election, the potential reunion of the Obi-Baba-Ahmed ticket is likely to be closely watched by Nigerian voters and analysts alike.
