Nigeria Ports Authority MD Elected IAPH Vice President

The International Association for Ports & Harbours (IAPH) has elected Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), as its Vice-President for Africa. This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s growing influence in global maritime affairs. The election, which took place in Tokyo, recognizes Dantsoho’s leadership and expertise in the maritime sector.

As the first Nigerian to lead the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa, Dantsoho has a proven track record of achievement. His appointment to the IAPH position reflects international recognition of Nigeria’s renewed leadership in maritime development, according to NPA spokesperson Ikechukwu Onyemekara. IAPH Secretary-General Masahiko Furuichi has also welcomed Dantsoho’s election, expressing his delight at the prospect of working together.

Under Dantsoho’s leadership, the NPA has made significant operational gains, including a 19.59% rise in non-oil exports to $3.225 billion in the first half of 2025. Export volumes on NPA platforms have also increased to 4.04 million metric tonnes. These reforms have contributed to Nigeria achieving a trade surplus for the first time in years, according to the Nigerian Economic Summit Group.

The IAPH is a global alliance of over 190 ports and 167 port-related businesses across 89 countries, handling more than 60% of the world’s seaborne trade and container traffic. As a key player in shaping global maritime policy, the organization works closely with the International Maritime Organization, World Customs Organization, and the United Nations system. Dantsoho’s elevation to the position of Vice-President for Africa places Nigeria at the forefront of global port policy debates, strengthening its voice in advancing trade efficiency, port resilience, and sustainable growth in the maritime sector.

The Nigerian Ports Authority’s renewed focus on maritime development has significant implications for the country’s economic growth and global trade. With Dantsoho’s leadership, Nigeria is poised to play a more prominent role in shaping the future of the maritime industry. As the IAPH continues to work towards advancing the interests of its members, Dantsoho’s expertise and experience will be invaluable in driving progress and growth in the sector.
