Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to One-China Principle in Socio-Economic Development

The Nigerian government has reiterated its support for the One-China principle, emphasizing its significance in the country’s socio-economic growth and manufacturing sector. This commitment was reaffirmed by the Director General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, during a meeting with a delegation from the Guangxi People’s Congress in Abuja.

The high-level delegation, led by Zhang Xiaoqin, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee, was accompanied by the Head of Mission of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Zhou Hongyou. Tegbe welcomed the delegation and highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing relationship with China, which was recently elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in 2024.

Tegbe outlined the NCSP’s mandate, which includes monitoring 55 FOCAC-agreed projects, overseeing strategic projects of national interest, and coordinating Presidential initiatives across seven key sectors. He expressed Nigeria’s willingness to learn from China’s model of high-scale modernization and pledged to visit Guangxi soon.

The NCSP Chief also welcomed Guangxi as a new partner alongside Hunan Province and assured that the organization will work closely with the delegation to identify immediate opportunities, particularly in manufacturing equipment, agriculture, and fruit production and processing. Zhang Xiaoqin thanked Tegbe for hosting the delegation and stressed Guangxi’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria.

Guangxi’s strategic role as a regional hub in southern China, its successful hosting of the China-ASEAN Expo, and rising trade with Nigeria, which grew by 21% last year to $320 million, were highlighted by Zhang. He invited Nigerian businesses and tourists to explore Guangxi’s strengths in fruit production, tourism, digital economy, and mining.

The meeting underscores the strengthening ties between Nigeria and China, with a focus on socio-economic development and manufacturing. The reaffirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to the One-China principle is expected to further deepen cooperation between the two nations. As Nigeria continues to explore opportunities for growth and development, its partnership with China is likely to play a significant role in shaping the country’s economic future.
