SDP Chieftain Criticizes PDP Zoning Formula

The Social Democratic Party’s chieftain, Adewole Adebayo, has expressed his views on the Peoples Democratic Party’s zoning of its presidential ticket, suggesting that the process should have taken place during the 2023 general elections. Adebayo made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Wednesday.

According to Adebayo, the concept of north-south rotation is not well understood, particularly when it results in the selection of less desirable candidates. He emphasized that the focus should be on choosing the best person for the job, regardless of their geographical origin. Adebayo stated, “My only concern is that when it goes to the North, they bring the worst person. When it comes to the South, they also bring the worst person.”

Adebayo’s comments highlight the complexities and challenges associated with zoning in Nigerian politics. The practice of rotating presidential tickets between the northern and southern regions has been a contentious issue in the country’s political landscape. While some argue that it promotes fairness and representation, others believe that it can lead to the selection of less qualified candidates.

The Social Democratic Party and other political parties in Nigeria have been navigating these issues as they prepare for future elections. Adebayo’s remarks underscore the need for a more nuanced approach to zoning, one that prioritizes the selection of competent leaders who can effectively address the country’s challenges.

The debate surrounding zoning is likely to continue, with various stakeholders offering their perspectives on the matter. As Nigerian politics continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the major parties will address the issue of zoning and its implications for the country’s leadership.
