Dele Momodu Rejects Zoning for Presidency

They may be working for Tinubu - Dele Momodu on PDP govs rejecting Atiku's coalition

Veteran journalist Dele Momodu has stated that the zoning of presidential tickets is not enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. Momodu emphasized that all qualified and competent Nigerians should be eligible to contest for the presidency. This statement comes as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to zone its presidential ticket to the South.

The PDP made this decision during its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja. However, Momodu pointed out that the party did not adhere to zoning after the death of former President Musa Yar’Adua. He noted that Yar’Adua’s death did not lead to the PDP insisting on power remaining in the North, allowing then-Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to assume the presidency.

Momodu highlighted the sequence of Nigerian presidencies, starting from 1999. He mentioned that former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as current President Bola Tinubu, have held or are holding office. According to Momodu, from 1999 to 2027, the South would have held power for 17 years, with the North having 11 years.

Momodu reiterated that zoning is not a constitutional provision and believes that any competent Nigerian should have the opportunity to run for the highest office. He advocated for a fair and transparent electoral process, stating that if President Tinubu wins the next election, it should be accepted, and if he loses, he should concede graciously.

The debate surrounding zoning and its implications for Nigerian politics continues. As the country navigates its democratic process, discussions around inclusion, representation, and constitutional adherence are likely to persist. The PDP’s decision to zone its presidential ticket has sparked conversations about the role of zoning in ensuring regional balance and representation in Nigerian politics.
