The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is facing opposition to its transformation efforts, according to the company’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari. He made this statement while hosting the leadership of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) at the NNPC Towers in Abuja. Ojulari emphasized that the company will not succumb to pressure from individuals seeking to derail reforms aimed at repositioning the company for the benefit of Nigerians.
Ojulari noted that change comes with a price and that the management of the NNPC Ltd. will not give in to short-term pressure. He stated that patience is needed as the transformation process unfolds, while reaffirming his commitment to the mandate given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The company will remain resilient despite challenges, Ojulari assured union leaders.
In his five months as Group Chief Executive Officer, Ojulari has focused on reviving Nigeria’s refineries under the Incorporated Joint Venture (IJV) model. This approach aims to ensure sustainable operations rather than temporary fixes. He explained that President Tinubu does not pressure him to make decisions that might compromise the company’s long-term goals. Instead, the focus is on establishing a baseline to ensure that the refineries operate sustainably.
PENGASSAN’s President, Festus Osifo, praised NNPC’s management for its partnership during the 2025 PENGASSAN Energy and Labour Summit in Abuja. He commended the progress recorded under Ojulari’s leadership, noting improvements in crude oil production and reductions in oil theft. Osifo stated that the union is solidly behind Ojulari and will collaborate with his team to ensure the stability of the system for the benefit of all Nigerians.
The NNPC Ltd.’s transformation efforts are significant, as the company plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. The company’s ability to withstand opposition and remain committed to its goals will be essential in achieving its mandate. As the transformation process continues, it is likely that the company will face further challenges. However, with the support of unions like PENGASSAN, the NNPC Ltd. may be able to navigate these challenges and achieve its objectives, ultimately benefiting the Nigerian people.
