APC Leader Seeks Police Protection for Lawmaker

N300bn loan saga: Engage Police, DSS to ensure Shittu's safety - APC chieftain to party leaders

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, AbdulWaheed Olatunde Lawal, has urged the party’s state chairman, Olayide Abas, to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of a state lawmaker, Ibraheem Shittu. Lawal, a legal practitioner from Saki West local government area, made this call in a statement, citing the need to protect Shittu from potential unlawful suspension or arrest by the state House of Assembly.

The lawmaker, who represents Saki West state constituency, had earlier raised concerns that the House of Assembly approved a N300 billion loan for the state governor, Seyi Makinde. However, the House of Assembly denied the claim, describing Shittu as an absentee lawmaker. Lawal, who hails from the same local government area as Shittu, advised the APC chairman and other party leaders to engage the police and Department of State Services (DSS) to guarantee Shittu’s safety.

Lawal emphasized that the party should not abandon Shittu after he spoke out against alleged wrongdoing, alleging that his life is in danger for exposing the truth. He called on the party leaders to petition the National Working Committee (NWC) and the office of the President to invoke federal protection for Shittu, should harassment or threats persist. The APC leader stressed that the party must stand firmly with Shittu, demonstrating its commitment to protecting those who fight corruption.

The situation highlights the need for political parties to support their members who expose alleged financial impropriety, ensuring their safety and security. Lawal’s call for action underscores the importance of protecting citizens who speak out against corruption, even in the face of potential reprisal. As the situation unfolds, the APC’s response will be closely watched, with all eyes on the party to take necessary steps to protect Shittu and uphold its commitment to transparency and accountability.
