Germany unemployment rises to decade high

German unemployment hits ten-year high — RT Business News

Germany’s unemployment rate has reached its highest level in a decade, with official figures showing the number of unemployed individuals exceeding three million in August. The labor report indicates a month-on-month increase of 46,000, bringing the total to 3.02 million in seasonally unadjusted terms, which accounts for 6.4% of the population.

According to Federal Employment Agency chief Andrea Nahles, the labor market struggles can be attributed to Germany’s weak economy. The country’s economy shrank by 0.2% in 2024, following a 0.3% contraction in 2023. This year, after a 0.3% expansion in the first quarter, output fell by 0.3% in the second quarter due to uncertainty over new US tariffs. The International Monetary Fund has warned that Germany may face a third consecutive year without growth.

Germany’s economic downturn coincides with its decision to halt imports of low-cost Russian energy, which was vital for its industry. The country previously sourced 55% of its gas from Russia but has since shifted to pricier liquefied natural gas imports from the US and Qatar, following the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. European gas prices have risen sharply as a result.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has admitted that Germany is facing a “structural crisis” rather than temporary weakness, and steering the economy toward growth has proven more difficult than expected. The country’s automotive sector, in particular, has shed over 51,000 jobs in the past year alone, with Merz noting that key industries such as the automotive segment are “no longer truly competitive.”

The rise in unemployment and economic stagnation have significant implications for Germany, and the government faces the challenge of revitalizing the economy and creating new job opportunities. As the country’s economic situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen what measures will be taken to address the crisis and promote growth.
