Boundary Dispute Resolved Between Achara and Ugwueme Communities

Land tussle: Abia, Enugu communities agree to end 16-year legal battle

A significant breakthrough has been achieved in a long-standing boundary dispute between the people of Achara in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State and the people of Ugwueme community in Agwu Local Government Area of Enugu State. After approximately 16 years of legal battles and tensions, the two communities have agreed to pursue an out-of-court settlement.

The agreement was reached during a peace and reconciliation meeting hosted by the Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government Area, Sunday Afurobi. Key stakeholders, including Mathias Nwachi, a member of the Abia State House of Assembly, and Anthony Okafor, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, attended the meeting. The decision to settle the dispute out of court was unanimous, with both communities agreeing to “settle at home” and end the protracted court case.

To formalize this agreement, a joint delegation will be formed to attend the next court hearing and request the withdrawal of the case. The delegation will comprise the two state assembly members, the Umunneochi Local Government Area Chairman, and three representatives from each community. Additionally, both parties have been advised to exchange relevant documents to facilitate the ongoing peace process before their next meeting.

The successful mediation of the dispute has been attributed to the unbiased and skillful efforts of Sunday Afurobi, the Umunneochi Local Government Area Chairman. Delegates from both communities have commended his role in achieving this resolution, which marks a significant step towards lasting peace between the two neighboring communities.

The boundary dispute has been a source of tension between the two communities for over a decade and a half, with both sides engaging in lengthy and costly legal battles. The decision to settle the dispute out of court is expected to bring relief to the affected communities and pave the way for improved relations between them. With the formation of a joint delegation and the exchange of relevant documents, the stage is set for a peaceful resolution to the dispute, and the communities can look forward to a more harmonious and cooperative future.
